The art of blending a leading perfume is kept a close secret and it can be hard to understand, however perfumes can be broken down into five general categories.
Perfume Categories
Single Flower Perfume and Fragrances
Today these perfumes are something of a rarity but in the late 1800's one flower fragrances were the only readily available scents. The flowers used were the obvious choices of rose, carnation, lily and violet. However even today single scent perfumes such as Yardleys' Lavender Water and Lily of the Valley are only two of the many single flower fragrances that are available.
Floral Bouquet Perfume and Fragrances
In this category perfume and fragrances arecomposed of flower essences, forming what is termed a floral bouquet. There are a huge number of they and some may seem quite similar but in reality no two are the same. Most of the perfume and fragrances in this category are based on the true alliance of roses and jasmine. It's a magnificent marriage and provides the romantic and persausive basis on which all sorts of other perfume ideas can be laid.
"Green" Perfume and Fragrances
Most of the perfume in this category falls intotwo divisions - the chypre family of resins, mosses and ferns and the purer green family of leaves , grasses and buds, and when the two are combined you get the whole gloriously verdant picture.
"Woody" Perfume and Fragrances
The "woody"category of perfume is a labyrinth of smoky, earthy, ambery, forestry fragrances gathered from ferns, mosses, bark, resins, lichen, leaves, roots and timbers. Straight out examples of the woods family are a rarity now and you'll find the stronger concentrations of these essences in men's fragrances.
"Fruity" Perfume and Fragrances
This is the luscious almost edible category. Some of the fruit dominated perfumes are honey smoothand aristocratic, like Rochas's grand classic, Femme. Others , such as Valentino's melon laced V are more full throated and sunny.
